Laboratory of Electrocatalysis and corrosion
(headed by Professor O.A.Petrii)

O.A.Petrii

A wide group of electrocatalytic and corrosion phenomena on metals, alloys, oxides and composite materials in aqueous and aprotic media is under study. These studies are based on the microscopic approach to experimental and theoretical consideration of the processes, and traditional electrochemical techniques are combined with scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, ellipsometry and also with conventional complex of physico-chemical techniques of material characterisation. Novel methods for fabricating nanostructures and multiphase compositions on the basis of anodic and cathodic electrocrystallization are worked out. New approaches to molecular design of the surface of electrodes-catalysts are developed.

Basic investigations of electrocatalysis theory, mechanisms of electrocatalytic processes and charge transfer elementary act in heterogeneous systems are in the center of attention, first of all, the experimental verification of modern quantum-mechanical theory of elementary act by means of using non-traditional model reactions. Advanced models of electrode charge effects in electrochemical kinetics are constructed, particularly double layer effects are considered on a microscopic level.

General tendencies of the reconstruction of multicomponent surfaces and surface diffusion are analyzed on the basis of experimental studies of re-newed elecrode surfaces and computer simulations.

With the aim of developing nickel/metalhydride batteries, a wide search is carried out to find new materials based on intermetallic compositions AB5 and AB2 which sorb hydrogen into the bulk under electrochemical conditions.

Since 1997, the lab is included (together with Institute of Physical Chemistry, RAS, and Departments of physical and colloid chemistry) into the Educational-Scientific Center "Nanochemistry".
